MTN is Ghana’s most widely used mobile network, and one of the most useful features it offers is the ability to send airtime (credit) from one MTN number to another. Whether you want to help a friend, support a family member, or top up a second line, transferring airtime is quick, easy, and free.
In this article, I’ll walk you through the different ways to send airtime from MTN to MTN, using simple steps. No need to download any app — just your phone and MTN SIM card.
📱 METHOD 1: USING USSD CODE
This is the easiest and most common way to transfer airtime.
Step-by-step:
- Dial *198# on your MTN phone.
- Select Option 1: Transfer Airtime.
- Enter the recipient’s MTN number.
- Enter the amount you want to send (e.g. 2 for GHS 2).
- Enter your Mobile Money PIN to confirm.
- You’ll get a confirmation message if successful.
Example: You want to send GHS 3 to 024XXXXXXX. Dial *198#, follow the prompts, and it’s done!
🔐 IMPORTANT: USE YOUR PIN SECURELY
MTN requires you to use a PIN to secure your airtime transfers. If it’s your first time, or you forgot your PIN, follow these steps:
- Dial *198#
- Select Option 2: Reset PIN
- Follow the prompts to reset it using your ID or security questions
Tip: Never share your PIN with anyone to avoid unauthorized transfers.
💡 METHOD 2: USING SHORTCODE DIRECTLY
You can also send airtime with a simple direct code if you already know your PIN.
Dial: *198*RecipientNumber*Amount*PIN#
Example: *198*0241234567*2*1234# to send GHS 2 to 0241234567, using 1234 as your PIN.
✅ THINGS TO REMEMBER
- You can only transfer to another MTN number (no Vodafone, AirtelTigo).
- Transfers must be done in Ghana Cedis (no airtime bundles).
- Minimum transfer: GHS 0.10 | Maximum per day: GHS 50 (may vary).
- No transfer charges for airtime sharing.
🎯 WHY THIS FEATURE IS USEFUL
- Helps parents send credit to children for emergency calls.
- Friends can help each other out without going to vendors.
- No need to buy scratch cards for small top-ups.
